Reviews based purely on nothing but my humble opinion. These are the last movies I watched, most of them are not that new.
This one was my sister's pick, I didn't knew what I was going to watch. And I balled my eyes out at the end :(
Well, Aftersun isn't for everyone, it is a very slow paced and "boring" film, but if you know anything about depression and pay attention to the amazing performance, you will get it, and it will hit you like a truck. The movie tells a story of a girl, who goes into a trip with her dad to spend summer vacation, and it all goes well and fine, until you see the subtle way that her dad gives away something is not right. He likes to record the trip and the movie is basically us watching all those recordings with the girl, who is now an adult, trying to piece together the life of her father.
There is the well known trope of the sea representing loneliness and feeling literally "blue" lol, a relationship that you see her father dwell in time and time again throughout the movie and it shows really well how a person with depression can be seen and act "fine" with others, but still not being able to live with himself.
This film really touched me in a particular way, having been born from a very young dad and mom and growing up seeing how two (not even) adults tackle raising a child while still learning their place in the world. And I put a lot of his depression on that feeling, I guess. ANYWAYSS, it's a great film, and I watched it twice!
A hora da estrela was first a written novel by Clarice Lispector in 1977, then adapted to this movie in 1985. The acting threw me off a lot honestly and I found myself a little bored throughout the film. I really never liked the acting on the 80s novelas, as it is called here in Brazil, and this film has a very close relationship with that kind of storytelling.
Besides that, the script in itself and the scenes are great, telling the story of Macabéa, a simple person in mind and spirit, or that is what you'll get on a superficial level. The need and curiosity of the main character and the way everyone around her just don't get her and feed that need is very frustrating, leaving you wondering what Macabéa could be if her environment and relationships were more open and people answered her questions.
The ending is, well, funny, to say the least. After getting her mind filled with hope and dreams for the first time in the movie, after being so criticized by other characters for not thinking about the future, not having any kind of emotion shown in her face, Macabéa finally goes out to meet this brilliant future when, out of nowhere, she gets hit by a car and dies. Shows to us how much we can plan and dream of the future, even though it may not even happen, and out of nowhere life throws you a curve ball. And the film left me wondering, if the fortune teller didn't fill her head with all those dreams, would Macabéa be dead?
When you see the first minutes of the film, you already know it is going to be a chaotic one. Chalamet plays a very young, ambicious guy, that is willing to pull the leg of each and everyone to get to his goal, being the best table tennis player in the world.
Going into this film I really thought it would show more of the sport and focus on that, but really the focus is on the peculiar nature of the main character and how he reacts when life throws him the worse things that could happen to him again ang again.
Overall the movie is really good, I absolutely hated the main character, in a good way, it shows how well it was played and no wonder the actor is getting a Oscar nomination. I just found that the movie is too dense, with so much happening in so little time, not being able to process everything. Definetely worth a second watch.
Very lighthearted and slow movie, which already makes it not for anyone. It gets a very different approach, showing a character that on the surface seems to lack motivation, but really is a very on the moment person, anti consumerism.
When you start to get a bit bored of the day to day life he lives, his niece comes in to really shake his routine, and having him interacting with another person on a deeper level adds a lot to his character. With her there, we see how he tries to confront his past and the way her sister sees him, as a lesser person for not having material and financial motivation.
Besides that, the movie has a lot of sweet moments, and I loved the tic tac toe bit running along the days. The motif of the homeless man dancing is also a very striking one, and seeing how the main character acknowledges and doesn't ignore his existence just hints more into his way of seeing life and appreciating it all, without judgements.
In the end, the movie really showed for me different ways of living life, and that one shouldn't be objectively better than the other. Sadly, on our current society, people that don't chase after material things are seen as lazy or unmotivated.
Also, he has a nice music taste, lol.
It's always a good time seeing people fly up in the air like chinese fighting movies, the classic old sensei which has a beard as long as his torso and unnecessary long named techniques which just explodes hearts.
Having watched this and the first volume I'm just glad Tarantino didn't go to a third movie, because that wouldn't have made any sense. With that said I still prefer the first movie, just because the part with the ninjas was really cool, and the scene selection was also amazing.
Well, if it isn't another movie where people fly up in the air and fight, right? This one is a classic, and I rewatched it for the millionth time. Always love to see all the attention to the details on this movie and its references, there is so much to unpack in it.
The effects are a bit outdated? Yes, for sure. But it is not that bad (yet) and I think for the plot and the idea, this movie is still pretty good and holds up well.
The story arc is the classic hero's journey and it is well told, with all the twists and turns you would hope from a classic, and it is well rounded, the movie closes in itself pretty well (that is until the sequels).
I'm gonna be honest with you. This movie disappointed me. I thought it would be better because of all the memes surrounding it, but yeah, it wasn't my fit.
It's cool having to look inside the mind of a absolute crazy man which is played very well by Christian Bale, but the movie lacked motivation for me, I wasn't invested in it that much and I think it lacks resolution. Many parts of the movie were dragging and stale and none of the characters seemed relatable (thank god). Guess this movie only served to show me I'm not crazy.
